Naspers, the South African media and internet company will be shutting down its aggregator-based news platform Bounce News Nigeria and this has raised concerns about its pay-TV platform-DSTV.
Established in 2017, Bounce News Nigeria which has a website and a mobile application has struggled to scale due to the competition in Nigeria’s digital publishing space despite investing huge sums in marketing the news-aggregator.
However, there may be light at the tunnel for the soon-to-be-ex-Nasper’s company as it has offered workers the chance to take over the company but it will be exiting with its app.
The shut down of another Naspers owned company in Nigeria has led to concerns in some quarters. You will recall that it has already shut down OLX, Careers24 and sold its shares in eCommerce platform, Konga. This leaves Media24, DSTV and PayU in the country.
The question on the lips of a good number of Nigerians is Will DSTV also exit Nigeria? You never know. It is business and if it is based on a business decision, DSTV will continue to exist in Nigeria because business is good for them compared the ones they have already shut down.
