Uber has launched a feature in Saudi Arabia that allows female drivers to select female-only riders. It began as a pilot program in September. The result showed that 74 per cent of Saudi female Uber drivers were only interested in driving women. Uber has now officially rolled out the feature in the country.
This is not really a surprise considering the fact that Saudi Arabia is an Islamic country that applies the Shariah law and the law prohibits men and women from mixing. Interestingly, this move by Uber follows the lifting of the longstanding ban on women drivers in the Kingdom in June last year.
On whether the feature will be made global, the ride-hailing app said it has no plans to do this in the near future.
