The 1st quarter 2020 industry data from the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has shown that MTN still has the largest share of internet subscribers despite the fact that Glo’s numbers are arithmetically increasing.
According to the NCC, Glo which still seats at number 3 on the data ladder, had the highest number of Internet subscriptions in Q1 2020 with over 4.9 million subscribers. This is a 1,194% increase from Q1 2019 when it got only 381,438 subscribers.
Meanwhile, MTN returned with 3.16 million internet subscribers, a 19.4% increase from 2.6 million in 2019.
For Artel, the telco had a 55% increase from 1.45 million internet subscribers in 2019 to 2.3 million subscribers in 2020.
9mobile, which just appointed a new CEO, continues to lose internet subscribers. In January it had 8,040,261 and lost 96,220 in February (7,944,041) and in March it lost 181973. For the 1st quarter 2020, 9Mobile Internet subscribers stand at 7,762,068.
According to NCC, MTN’s subscribers hit 57.2 million in Q1 2020, but MTN’s report for the same period put active data subscribers at 26.8 million, which literally means that about 30 million internet users are active.
For Artel, it currently has over 36.8 million internet subscriptions. It recorded 16.7 million active data subscribers in Q1 2020 and over 20.1 million inactive users.
In Q1 2020, MTN was able to gather ₦227.6 billion ($587.5 million) from voice calls and SMS, which is almost five times the amount it generated from data.
