The Federal Government has ordered telecommunication companies in Nigeria to suspend their services in Zamfara due to rising insecurity in the state. This would also allow for the planned joint security operation to be carried out seamlessly. The suspension is with immediate effect.
The order was announced in a memo titled “Re: Shutdown of All Telecom Sites in Zamfara State” by the Executive Vice Chairman Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Umar Danbatta.
“The pervading security situation in Zamfara State has necessitated an immediate shut down of all telecom services in the state from today, September 3 to September 17, 2021,” the memo to the Chief Executive Officers of the telcos read.
“All operators are to shut down all sites in Zamfara and any site(s) in neighbouring states that could provide communication service to the state.”
In the past few months, there has been a breakdown in the security architecture in the Northwestern state of Zamfara. Bandits have taken over some parts of the state kidnapping and killing innocent Nigerians.
