The list of African Venture Capitalists is slowly growing. Although funding or investment in African startups is still dominated by foreign VCs. You will still find indigenous VCs writing checks. They include Future Africa, GreenHouse Capital, and Janngo Capital among others.
Another one is about to join this growing list. It is From Here Ventures, a $25 million venture capital fund managed by Impact Africa Network.
From Here ventures is an early-stage venture fund deploying capital and a suite of support capabilities to exceptional entrepreneurs building transformative companies in Africa.
The new venture capital fund aims to leverage its intrinsic understanding of how things work in Africa to stand out from other VCs. From Here has knowledge of local companies and networks to differentiate it.
Among From Here’s investment focus areas:
- Infrastructure startups aimed at scaling specific industry pain points.
- Mission driven companies focused on human wellbeing.
- Women-led startups and companies that prioritize women in leadership roles
This is quite interesting because there is a lot of money coming from international VCs. Of course, this is not a bad thing. For example, Y Combinator is doing a lot for African startups through its Winter and Summer programmes and Google just pledged to invest $1 billion in the next 5 years to support digital transformation on the continent.
