Seven African media startups have been selected for the latest cohort of the Jamlab Accelerator Programme.

These startups will participate in a virtual six-month programme with the teams tackling varying media challenges in their respective countries.

The teams are based in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Madagascar, eSwatini, Zambia, Botswana and Angola.

This six-month hothouse Jamlab Accelerator, initiative for journalism and media innovators will provide teams with the necessary tools, contacts and support to help realise their ideas and ambitions.

Eburnie Today (Côte d’Ivoire)

Eburnie Today is a newsroom founded in 2016 in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) to promote innovation in journalism and new ideas to engage the public. Their mission is to produce independent news based on commitment and integrity. Their field of focus is fact-checking and investigative journalism. 

Maternal Figures (Nigeria)

Maternal Figures is a research organisation founded in 2019, that tracks maternal health interventions in Nigeria, producing a comprehensive database that’s used in newsrooms across the country. 

The Republic (Nigeria)

The Republic is a subscription media platform and community providing unrivalled, personalised coverage of Africa, for the Africa-curious. Founded in 2018, The Republic focuses on the media space in Nigeria. 

Tranquil Media Group (Kenya)

Tranquil Media Group is a Tanzanian media programme founded in 2017, that showcases African children’s content which entertains and educates them as they show their talents and learn. Tranquil Media Group also has a flagship career-centric publication, Career Fodder, which focuses on helping young people tap into their potential and escape poverty. 

Health Equity Media Lab (HEML) (South Africa)

HEML is an app focused on tech solutions that reach audiences with credible, actionable health information and services that are far-reaching in language, content and platform use. 

Toto Junction TV (Tanzania)

Toto Junction TV is a children’s television programme started on the digital platform as the Abby and Alvin Show coordinated by the Browseyamu Limited Company in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The aim is to produce digital and traditional media content to capture knowledge and skills among African children by engaging them through various things. Toto Junction TV was founded in 2019.

ZimTracker (Zimbabwe)

ZimTracker is an impartial and apolitical not-for-profit fact-checking organisation founded in 2020 that aims to fact check social and mainstream media reports and claims by private and public office bearers to ensure the proper flow of verified, truthful and impartial news.

Jamlab, short for the Journalism and Media Lab, is a project of Wits Journalism. The aim of the Jamlab Accelerator Programme is to support more and better innovation in journalism and media in Africa.
